Washington Permanente Medical Group is a self-governing multispecialty group consisting of approximately 1,400 clinicians—the largest group practice in the state of Washington. “The Board” represents all WPMG medical staff in formulating corporate policy, developing strategic goals and actions, and overseeing the activities of the organization.

Stephen Tarnoff, MD, serves as president and executive medical director of the Washington Permanente Medical Group. Dr. Tarnoff practiced as a family physician for more than 25 years, and has gone on to hold numerous leadership positions within the organization, including chief of Central Region Primary Care, chief of Consultative Specialty Care Services, medical director for Care Delivery, medical director for Medicare and Medicaid, and medical director for the organization’s contracted network in Western Washington.
He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, and completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Washington. He completed a fellowship in Medical Education and Health Policy at the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is board certified in Family Medicine and a member of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians and the Washington State Medical Association.
